Guide · Plain explanation

What hotel SEO is, without the vocabulary.

Written for a general manager who has been pitched something vague before and would like to know what is actually being described. No jargon that is not explained, no acronyms used as though they were self-evident, and no claim that anything here is proprietary.

02The mechanism

Two things decide what a search engine shows.

Strip away everything else and search ranking comes down to a pair of judgments, made automatically, about every page that could possibly answer a query.

Both halves are required. A well-written page nobody has ever referenced will struggle in a competitive market. A heavily referenced page that does not address the search will not appear for it either. Programs that only produce content, or only build links, fail for this reason.

Everything else you will hear described, technical audits, internal linking, structured data, page speed, is in service of one of those two judgments. It is not a separate category of magic.

  • 01

Is this page about the thing that was searched?

Decided by what the page actually says, how it is structured, what its headings claim, and whether the content genuinely addresses the question rather than mentioning it in passing. This is the content half.

  • 02

Does anyone credible appear to trust this page?

Decided largely by which other sites reference it and how credible those sites are. A page nobody links to is treated as unproven regardless of how good it is. This is the authority half.

03The hotel difference

Why hospitality is not like other industries.

Most of what is written about SEO assumes a business whose competitors are other businesses selling the same thing. A hotel’s situation is stranger than that.

These are not nuances. Each one changes what is worth doing, and an agency that does not know them will spend your budget optimizing a homepage for a term you already rank for.

  • Your distribution partners are also your search competitors, and they outrank you for your own name while charging you commission for the guests they send
  • Demand starts with a place rather than a product, so the valuable searches happen months earlier and do not contain your name
  • Guest reviews feed search visibility as well as guest decisions, which makes them a ranking asset managed by your front desk
  • A flagged property cannot change its own website, which rules out most of what a general agency would propose first
  • Booking windows vary from days to most of a year, so timing matters in a way it does not for a shop
04The vocabulary

Terms you will be told, translated.

  • 01

    On-page SEO

Changes to your own pages: what they say, how they are titled and structured, how they link to each other. The content half of the mechanism.

  • 02

    Off-page SEO or link building

Getting other sites to reference yours. The authority half. When we say every link is delivered with a live URL, this is what is being delivered.

  • 03

    Technical SEO

Making sure nothing mechanical stops a page being found or read: speed, broken links, duplicate pages, indexing problems.

  • 04

    Local SEO

The map surface rather than the classic results list. For a property this frequently matters more, because on a phone the map often appears above everything else.

  • 05

    Domain authority

A third-party estimate of how credible a site looks, on a 0 to 100 scale. Useful for comparing link opportunities. Not a figure any search engine publishes or uses.

  • 06

    Guest post

An article published on another site that references yours. One of the standard ways authority is earned, and one of the deliverables counted in every plan here.

05Process

What a program actually does, week to week.

The same five steps whatever the property. This is what you are buying.

  • 01

    Market review

We look at your destination, your competitive set and where your demand currently comes from before we touch anything.

  • 02

    Keyword analysis

Destination, neighborhood, room type, amenity and experience terms, mapped against what you can realistically win.

  • 03

    On-page checks

Technical and structural work on the pages that have to convert, so the demand we send you has somewhere to land.

  • 04

    Authority build

Guest posts, Web 2.0 properties and amplification, every one delivered with a live, clickable URL you can open.

  • 05

    Report and refine

A monthly report you can check yourself, and a plan that changes based on what moved rather than what we hoped would.

06Tips

Six things worth doing before you hire anybody.

All of these are free, none require an agency, and together they address most of what is usually missing at a single property.

  • 01

    Search your own property name

In a private browser window. If a listing site appears above your own site, you are paying commission for guests who had already chosen you. This is the most expensive problem on the list.

  • 02

Check your map profile is accurate

Categories, attributes, opening details, current photographs. It is free, it takes an hour, and it affects the surface most guests see first on a phone.

  • 03

Ask for reviews consistently rather than occasionally

Recency matters as much as score. A steady trickle beats a burst followed by silence.

  • 04

Give each room type its own page

A guest searching for a specific kind of room is close to booking, and a rooms index answers them worse than a dedicated page would.

  • 05

Write about the neighborhood, not the city

The city term is contested by companies with enormous budgets. The neighborhood term is frequently winnable and brings guests who have already narrowed the decision.

  • 06

    Count how bookings actually arrive

If you do not know your current split between direct and third party, you cannot tell whether anything you do afterwards worked.

07Questions

Questions.

What is SEO in the hotel industry?

SEO in the hotel industry is the work of making a property appear in search results for the things guests search before they book. It differs from SEO elsewhere in one structural way: a hotel competes against its own distribution partners, because listing sites rank for hotel names and for the destination terms that lead to them. The work therefore splits between defending your own name and competing for the demand upstream of it.

How does a search engine decide what to show?

Broadly, by two things: how well a page matches what was searched, and how much other credible sites appear to trust it. The first is a content and structure problem, the second is an authority problem, and a page needs both. That is the entire mechanism, and everything else is detail about how to achieve those two things.

What are the most useful hotel SEO tips for a small team?

Check whether a listing outranks you for your own property name, because that is the most expensive leak and often the easiest fix. Keep your map profile accurate and your reviews recent. Write one page per room type rather than one rooms page. Pick the neighborhood rather than the city. Those four cost little and address most of what a small property is missing.

How long does hotel SEO take to work?

Months rather than weeks, and it rarely moves in a straight line. Deliverable turnaround runs 8 to 18 days depending on the plan, so the work itself appears quickly, but search engines reassess slowly and competitive destinations take longer than quiet ones. Anyone promising results in weeks is describing something other than what actually happens.

Is SEO better than paid advertising for a hotel?

They do different jobs and most properties eventually use both. Paid search buys visibility immediately and stops the day you stop paying. SEO builds visibility slowly and keeps most of it. For a property trying to reduce distribution cost, the durability matters, because a channel shift you have to keep buying every month is a smaller gain than one that persists.

Do we need to understand any of this to buy it?

No, but you should understand enough to tell whether you are being sold something reasonable. If an agency cannot explain what it will do in plain language, cannot show you the work afterwards as live URLs you can open, or guarantees rankings, those are all reasons to be careful regardless of how the rest of the proposal reads.
